sale of closed schools
doriam
Did anyone see the small article in the Oregonian last week that discussed the Southwest Charter School and its attempts to lease the Smith Elementary School property. There was a quote from an e-mail Tuesday rejecting the charter school's proposal.
Chief Operating Office for PPS, Cathy Mincberg said that the district received more favorable lease offers than the Southwest Charter proposal in both 2005 and 2006 and that developers were interested in putting housing there.
"We have many developers who are anxious for us to offer the property for sale, and we believe that it will bring $8-12 million," Mincberg wrote.
Mincberg goes on to say in the article that the lease proposals were ultimately rejected on financial grounds. The option of selling to developers, she said, "is not in; it's not out. It's not even on the radar."
Mincberg expects the district's board to make a decision on the property in roughly a year, after the district evaluates its real estate holdings. The board may ask voters to approve a construction bond in 2008.
Their logic escapes me. I hope that by electing new school board members that this madness will stop!...these short term financial gains that PPS is so fond of, actually hurt the school district.
building new schools?
I heard that a "facilities committee" has been formed to study a proposal to pass a bond measure to fund new buildings since we are not going to have enough room for the projected gain in students. Yes, I too was flabbergasted when I heard this at a meeting. My mouth dropped open. No lie. And I also contacted the WWeek about this, since I think it is pertinent information. Guess no one else seems to see how ridiculous it is to close school after school, then expect the public to pass a bond measure to build new ones. Can you say "IDIOTS!?" or is that MORONS????
